Question 1

What is sonic branding?

Accepted Answer

Sonic branding (also called audio branding or sound branding) is the strategic use of sound to reinforce brand identity. It includes sonic logos, brand music, sound design, and audio guidelines that create a distinctive and memorable audio experience across all brand touchpoints, from advertising to apps to physical spaces.

Question 2

What is a sonic logo?

Accepted Answer

A sonic logo is a short, distinctive sound or melody that represents a brand-the audio equivalent of a visual logo. Famous examples include Intel's five-note bong, Netflix's 'ta-dum', and McDonald's 'I'm Lovin' It' jingle. Sonic logos typically last 1-3 seconds and are designed to be instantly recognizable and emotionally resonant.

Question 3

How is sonic branding different from audio branding?

Accepted Answer

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both refer to the practice of creating a distinctive audio identity for a brand. Some practitioners use 'sonic branding' to emphasize the strategic, identity-building aspects, while 'audio branding' may focus more on the technical and production elements. At EightSix, we approach both as integrated parts of building a complete brand sound.

Question 4

What is the difference between sonic branding and jingles?

Accepted Answer

Sonic branding is a comprehensive strategic framework for how a brand sounds across all touchpoints, while a jingle is a single advertising song. A sonic identity includes sonic logos, brand music themes, UI sounds, voice guidelines, and more. Jingles are typically campaign-specific, whereas sonic branding creates lasting brand assets that work across all media for years.

Question 5

How much does sonic branding cost?

Accepted Answer

Sonic branding investment varies significantly based on scope, complexity, and usage rights. A basic sonic logo project might start around €15,000-30,000, while comprehensive sonic identity systems for global brands can range from €50,000 to €500,000+. We tailor every project to your specific needs and budget, ensuring you get maximum value from your investment.

Question 6

What is sync licensing?

Accepted Answer

Sync (synchronization) licensing is the process of obtaining rights to use existing music in visual media: films, TV shows, advertisements, video games, and online content. It involves negotiating with rights holders (typically both the recording owner and the publishing/songwriter owner) to 'synchronize' music with visual content.

Question 7

How much does sync licensing cost?

Accepted Answer

Sync licensing costs vary widely based on the artist's profile, song popularity, usage scope, and media type. Emerging artist tracks might cost €5,000-25,000 for regional advertising, while well-known songs can range from €50,000 to several million for global campaigns. We help brands find the right music at the right price point, often discovering emerging artists who offer authentic sound at accessible rates.

Question 8

How long does it take to create a sonic identity?

Accepted Answer

A typical sonic branding project takes 8-16 weeks from kickoff to delivery, depending on complexity. This includes discovery and research (2-3 weeks), creative development and composition (4-8 weeks), testing and refinement (2-3 weeks), and guidelines and asset delivery (1-2 weeks). Rush timelines are possible for an additional fee.

Question 9

What's included in a sonic branding package?

Accepted Answer

Our sonic branding deliverables typically include: a core sonic logo in multiple lengths and variations, brand music themes and soundscapes, sound design elements (UI sounds, notification sounds), voice and tone guidelines, comprehensive audio brand guidelines, and asset libraries for your team to use across all touchpoints.

Question 10

What brands use sonic branding?

Accepted Answer

Most major global brands now invest in sonic branding. Notable examples include Intel (the iconic bong since 1994), Netflix (the 'ta-dum'), Mastercard (a comprehensive sonic identity launched in 2019), BMW, Mercedes-Benz, T-Mobile, and McDonald's. In recent years, brands across all sectors-from tech to finance to retail-have recognized sound as a critical brand asset.

Question 11

How do you measure sonic branding ROI?

Accepted Answer

We measure sonic branding success through multiple metrics: brand recall and recognition studies (typically showing 2-3x improvement), emotional response testing via biometrics, consistency audits across touchpoints, engagement metrics in digital applications, and business impact indicators like ad effectiveness scores. We establish baseline measurements before launch and track improvements over time.

Question 12

Do you work with emerging artists?

Accepted Answer
